Two huge errors in the early 00s cost Fergie complete dominance. 1) Letting go of Stam and replacing him with Blanc. 2) Replacing Peter with Barthez and not snapping up VDS when Buffon was bought by Juventus.(VDS was made Juve number 2, fulham snapped him up for a bargain. Crazy. )

And because he paid quite a sizeable fee for Barthez at the time he couldnt admit to defeat and ask the board for another GK. Because lets be honest Fergie probably would have wanted to get a new GK literally within a year of buying Barthez. How many times did Man Utd play premier league opposition and the other teams keeper had a worldy performance. All those keepers were better than Barthez. VDS for Fulham, Nigel Martyn for Everton was great, Remember Freidel for Balckburn. He was was quality compared to Barthez and always had great games versus United. So many keepers were better than Barthez.

Its easy to see the game in normal time and think, 'that was a great goal' but actually if you look at it head on I reckon a normal 6ft 4, 6ft 5 keeper would make pretty comfortable dives for a lot of the famous goals United conceded during those years. There is one by Gerrard at Anfield which is one of his famous goals. And it was against Barthez. It looked great but actually The ball is barely in the corner, more central. Barthez had this habit of making every shot and goal conceded look better than it actually was. I have no idea what Fergie and his recruitment were thinking with Barthez. Its the polar opposite of the sort of keeper United should want.

@@Adam-cj2jg A couple of key signings cost United continuing their dominance over that period. They had such a great core, the periphery signings were not quite right. Fergie's other skills make up for it but with those skills he could have really hammered home a period of dominance both domestically and in europe around that time with a touch better recruitment. I remember watching the matches against Real Madrid thinking this match is there for the taking. The galactico Real madrid team did not actually function that well, it relied on individuals doing something. Also relied a bit on fear factor. They got found out a lot by opposition who went at them.

I agree. Woeful in defence at times. Speaks volumes that barthez was replaced by Carroll and howard. United, being attack minded , were liable to poor moments at the back but 02 was awful.
